In its strategy to revitalize the dairy sector, Burkina Faso is taking a new step with the launch of a program to import 710 high-yielding pregnant dairy cows from Brazil. This initiative aims to sustainably increase national milk production and strengthen the capacities of breeders. This is an operation which is part of a global strategy aimed at modernizing its milk and livestock-meat sectors.
The arrival of the animals was preceded by a process initiated since June 2025 by the Center for the Promotion of Poultry and Multiplication of High-Performing Animals (CPAMAP) at the Daniel Franco Institute (IDF), recognized in Brazil for its expertise in animal selection and sustainable breeding, with a view to strengthening its capacities in genetic improvement of livestock.
Why animals coming from Brazil?
“Because Brazil has expertise in breeding high-performance breeds and also it is a country that has similarities in terms of climatic conditions with Burkina Faso. We told ourselves that the animals that will come from this country will be able to better adapt to our climatic conditions,” said Ardiouma Sirima, Director General of CPAMAP.
For this first operation, five breeds of cows were targeted: Gir, Girolando, Holstein, Gouzéra and Nélore.
