The Ambassador of India to Burkina Faso, H.E. Shri Om Prakash Meena visited the Niangdo dam on August 18, 2026. The Indian diplomat was accompanied by the Associate Administrator of UNDP and the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, the Resident Representative of UNDP, government representatives and local authorities.
Supported by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, the project received $1 million from the Indian government, with contributions of $383,000 from Burkina Faso and $200,000 from UNDP.
The delegation interacted with local communities and witnessed the impact of the project on irrigation, food security and livelihoods. The 580,000 m³ dam enabled initial production of around 11 tonnes of rice and 50 tonnes of onions.
The day’s hosts reaffirmed the shared commitment to complete the remaining works, ensure the resilience of the dam and facilitate its official handover to the government of Burkina Faso.
The visit ended with the planting of mango tree seedlings at Niangbila Primary School, symbolizing a shared commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
