The Indian Government, through its official spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal, explained in a press release on September 6, 2026, India’s position regarding the vote on the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the equal area world map.
The official spokesperson clarified that India voted in favor of the resolution and also explained its vote by highlighting the underlying principle of promoting equal cartographic representation.

The statement also emphasizes that the resolution does not constitute an endorsement of any specific map, projection or representation of national borders. The sovereign territory of India, including the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, shall be represented in accordance with the official map of India. Any inaccurate or misleading representation is unacceptable. Our position on India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is clear, consistent and non-negotiable.
As a reminder, on September 4, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “Correcting the map: rebalancing global cartographic representation and promoting equitable representation of the world’s regions, particularly Africa.” Its goal is to encourage the use of equal-area map projections that preserve the relative sizes of landmasses.
The resolution does not adopt or authenticate any particular world map, nor does it address political cartography, including international borders, disputed territories, or place names.
